R. Lee Ermey passed away at the age of 74 last night. The Marine Corp drill instructor turned actor had roles in many memorable films, but is best known for playing hard ass Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 Stanley Kubrick Vietnam classic Full Metal Jacket, for which he received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.
Ermey was a natural for the role because he actually served as a drill sergeant, and delivered some eternally memorable lines while laying into fresh faced recruits.
Someone uncovered some rare behind the scenes footage shot by Kubrick’s daughter of Kubrick directing and working with the actors, including re-writing with Ermey in the barracks between takes. Even though Kubrick and Ermey are beyond an odd couple, the results speak for themselves.
RIP R. Lee Ermey. He lived a helluva life, maggots.
The making of the famous ‘this is my rifle, this is my gun’ scene.
