As a player, Derek Jeter was the symbol of winning and was known for his impenetrable calm demeanor. Derek Jeter, Marlins CEO, is…..different.
After trading away superstar Giancarlo Stanton, and many of the other top players from last year’s team, Miami looks like they could lose 100 games. In a preview of an upcoming interview with HBO’s Real Sports, Bryant Gumbel confronted Jeter with the evidence that the Marlins are tanking the season.
Instead of keeping his famous unflappable demeanor, Jeter got uncharacteristically testy with Gumbel over the question and pushed back at the notion. He said his team has a chance to win everyday, and even called Gumbel ‘mentally weak.’
In Jeter’s defense, the World Champion Astros proved that tanking in baseball can work, so the idea isn’t that crazy. It’s still weird watching Gumbel get under Jeter’s skin after 20 years of him playing it cool.
