On November 8, 2017 at Nazare beach in Portugal, Brazilian big wave surfer Rodrigo Koxa successfully rode a massive wave in one of the more ridiculous, and dangerous-athletic feats you’ll likely ever see. Now it’s officially being called the biggest wave ever surfed.
After careful deliberation, The World Surf League has announced that it’s officials determined Koxo’s wave was 80-feet, breaking the old record of 78-feet, set by American Garrett McNamara in 2011.
If you haven’t seen Koxo’s record setting Nazare ride, watch it here. There aren’t many sports where the consequence of failure is certain death. It’s a different ball game.
Here’s the old record 78-foot run by McNamara. Not too bad either.
