Some NBA tampering rules shouldn’t apply to Magic Johnson
News broke over the weekend that the Indiana Pacers have filed a tampering complaint against the Lakers for improper contact with Paul George, some of which came from an appearance by Magic Johnson on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.
Colin thinks that the spirit of the tampering rule wasn’t made with celebrity NBA executives like Magic in mind, and he should get a pass. The reality is that Magic’s celebrity status means he has relationships with current and former players that other GM’s don’t. While most couldn’t pick Rockets GM Daryl Morey out of a lineup, Magic can’t go anywhere without being recognized.
Exceptions to rules are often given when circumstances dictate, and in the case of Magic, some of the traditional tampering rules shouldn’t apply. The real outrage would be if any of this prevented Paul George from going to the Lakers. That would be a bad look for the NBA.
