Shanahan deserves a pass for missing on Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes has already established himself as a generationally transcendent talent and seems like the clear heir apparent to Tom Brady as the face of the league. Like many who evaluated Mahomes out of college, Niners HC Kyle Shanahan didn’t see him as a potential Hall of Famer, and was okay passing on him with the 3rd pick – which became bust defensive tackle Solomon Thomas. Colin doesn’t think it’s fair to play the blame game now that Mahomes has become a league MVP because his college tape was all over the place, and hardly anyone – other than Reid and the Chiefs – even had him as a first rounder. The Chiefs deserve credit for having the vision, but given the info on Mahomes at the time and the Niners picking third, it’s not fair to blame GM John Lynch and Shanahan for passing.
