Gottlieb in for Colin:
Khalil Mack trade makes sense in the salary cap NFL
The Raiders and Jon Gruden have been getting crushed by the media and Raider fans alike for trading All-Pro pass rusher Khalil Mack to the Bears for two first round picks, but Doug thinks the trade makes sense in the modern salary cap NFL.
Doug argues that unlike the Rams, who just re-signed defensive cornerstone Aaron Donald to a massive new deal, the Raiders have already had to pay Derek Carr, and signing Mack to the largest contract for a defensive player would consume so much of their salary cap space it would be hard to fill out a competitive roster. Mack is a great player, but it’s hard to win when two players are eating up that much cap room.
