Doug Gottlieb in for Colin:
Cam Newton’s MVP season created unreasonable expectations
After back-to-back impressive performances, Cam Newton threw three interceptions in a Thursday night loss to the Eagles. Doug doesn’t think Cam should be getting killed over it, because maybe it’s just who he is as an NFL QB.
After his 2015 MVP season, many immediately assumed he was going to be a top NFL quarterback for the rest of his career, but winning an MVP doesn’t always equate to prolonged success. Since then, Cam has regressed back to the mean.
He’s still capable of having incredible games, and often makes eye popping plays due to his freakish athleticism, but he’s just not among the top quarterbacks in the league.
Groundhog Day for the Nationals
The Nationals lost Game 5 of their NLDS series by imploding against the Cubs with a number of self-inflicted wounds that cost them the game, highlighted by a 4-run 5th inning where everything went wrong. It was their fourth trip to the postseason since 2012, and they have yet to make it out of the divisional round since the franchise moved to Washington.
Even thought the Nationals are consistently among the top teams in the regular season, their postseason failures are now becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Like all teams that don’t have postseason success, once things go bad, they seem to snowball, and for the Nationals, once things get tight in the playoffs, coming up short seems to be inevitable.
The more they fall on their face, it will only become harder to get the playoff monkey off their back.
