Drew Brees should test free agency
In the NFL, very few players have any leverage when it comes to contract negotiations, and those that do rarely use it. A small group of franchise quarterbacks do have the ability to swing the leverage hammer, and Colin can’t understand why they always rush to re-sign with their teams without even exploring other options.
Drew Brees is due for a new contract and finds himself in the leverage position with the Saints. He can’t be franchised, is free to sign anywhere, and Colin thinks he should at least test the free agency market. He won’t, but he should.
The Vikings shouldn’t overpay for Case Keenum
No one thinks rationally when they’re highly emotional, and after the miracle last-second touchdown to beat the Saints, Skol nation is ready to lock up career backup to a lifetime deal. Colin thinks Keenum has had a storybook season, but when it comes to signing him to a big money deal, Colin would pass.
Colin wouldn’t use the franchise tag on Keenum, and would have no problem letting him walk if he demands to be paid like a top-tier quarterback. Colin’s opinion is blasphemous in Minnesota today, and will be even less popular if the Vikings win it all, but it’s clearly the right call when the emotion is removed from the situation. Someone will overpay for Keenum, but it shouldn’t be Minnesota.
