Deshaun Watson has the NFL quarterback “it” factor

Deshaun Watson made his debut for the Texans last night, and Colin was impressed. Watson made some mistakes, but didn’t look overwhelmed by the speed of the game or have a deer in the headlights look like some NFL rookie quarterback washouts.

Much like Dak Prescott with the Cowboys last year, Watson just seems to have the NFL confidence “it” factor that separates the rookie busts from the ones who turn into franchise QB’s.  It’s only the preseason, obviously, but when a young quarterback is terrified, you can usually smell it from the first snap.

Josh Rosen has the right to free speech, but not freedom from its consequence

UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen stirred a debate when he said that big time college athletics and high level academics don’t mix. Colin largely agreed with Rosen’s position that when athletes commit to playing major college sports, they are required to prioritize sports over school.

Some agree with Rosen and some oppose him, and his head coach Jim Mora pointed out in an interview that some will vehemently disagree with his quarterback’s comments, but dealing with those consequences is part of free speech, too.

Colin pointed out that one of those negative consequences could come when he declares for the NFL Draft. Some NFL GM’s may not be thrilled with drafting a quarterback who is regularly speaking out on a variety issues, as Rosen has been prone to do. They may not want to deal with the extra media attention caused by future controversial comments while they are trying to get ready for a road game in Week 4. It’s within the owners’ rights to pass on drafting him if they feel it might be a problem, just like it’s Rosen’s right to speak out.

America guarantees the right to free speech, but not the freedom to speak without consequence.
