Highlights of Bill Walton’s MLB Announcing Debut Are A Long Strange Trip

As an NBA long-hair superstar hippie, BIll Walton led the Blazers to an NBA title in ’77 and had one of the most dominant college careers ever at UCLA. As an announcer, Walton has called basketball games for 30 years, and added his special brand of psychedelic commentary, complete with dead end Grateful Dead tangents.

Last night for the White Sox 70’s night, Walton hopped into the booth to do baseball color commentary for the first time, and it was a long strange trip like a 3-hour Jerry Garcia solo at the Garden in ’72. It’s unclear if Walton had actually ever seen baseball played before, but the extremely long pauses in the game action actually complimented his constant barrage of stoned Uncle soliloquies like peanut butter and jelly.

Here’s a helluva home run call on a Mike Trout bomb:

Let’s see what he can do in an NFL booth after an hour alone in the green room with some Afghan Kush.

“Rainbow is my favorite color.”
