Jon Gruden’s potential return to the NFL with the Raiders has the NFL world buzzing, but today Colin warned those that think he’ll return to the sidelines after a 9 year lay off and immediately re-establish the Raiders as Super Bowl contenders should pump the brakes.
Even though Gruden has stayed “close to the game” during his coaching absence, the NFL is a completely different league than the one he last coached in, and being around the game isn’t the same as being in the fire. There are also numerous examples of coaches returning from broadcasting to coaching after long layoffs that have failed miserably.
Right now, Colin believes Gruden’s brother Jay – head coach of the Bengals – is the better coach of the two because he’s been coaching in the NFL while his brother has been away in the booth. Gruden may succeed, but it’s far from the sure thing some make it out to be.
“Jay Gruden is a better coach than Jon Gruden right now.”
