Angry Kobe fans vandalized an artist’s second attempt at a mural to commemorate LeBron James joining the Lakers. Ruining the second mural seems extra petty because it respectfully included James among a host of Laker legends, including Bryant, but it was still too much for Mamba fans to take.
Colin thinks tribal Kobe fans fly in the face of what L.A. has always been, a town that readily embraces superstars, not one that pushes them away. Ultimately, Kobe fans hate LeBron because they are threatened by him and fear that his success as a Laker will somehow diminish Bryant’s legacy, which is absurd.
Even though trashing murals is juvenile and dumb, Kobe fans’ insecurity over LeBron is the ultimate compliment and only proves his relevance and importance. They wouldn’t be mad if he didn’t matter.
Like it or not, right now the Lakers ARE LeBron’s team, just like they were Magic, or Kobe’s, or Shaq’s when they were at their peak. Vandalizing every mural of LeBron that pops up across all of southern California isn’t going to change that.
