Supremely hyped rookie Lonzo Ball makes his highly anticipated debut with the Lakers, tonight. Sixers’ rookie Ben Simmons made his NBA debut for Philly, last night, and finished with an impressive 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in a loss to the Wizards.
Colin thinks the two rookies will be compared to each other throughout their careers, because they’re entering the league together and both are considered pass first, franchise changing picks.
Today in The Herd, he compared the two, and concluded that Simmons will have the better career when it’s all said and done.
He thinks Lonzo will be a transcendent passer because of his incredible court vision, in the mold of a Jason Kidd, but he’s not a great athlete, is easily fatigued, and won’t change games with his scoring. He’ll still elevate the Lakers, and will be helped by the likelihood L.A. will land key free agents and continue to surround him with more talent. LeBron James wouldn’t hurt.
At 6’10, Simmons is more of a Magic Johnson prototype. He’s longer, stronger, more versatile, a far better athlete, finishes better around the rim, and has a higher ceiling because of his superior physical ability.
Colin thinks Lonzo will get more attention in L.A., and help lead the Lakers back to relevance, but Simmons will be the better NBA player of the two, barring injury.
“I like Lonzo Ball. Ben Simmons is a better player to me. No question.”
