One of the hottest topics of speculation heading in to Super Bowl 51 in Houston was how Roger Goodell would fulfill his duties as NFL Commissioner if Tom Brady won his 5th Super Bowl title. The bad blood that has resulted from the protracted Deflategate litigation is no secret, especially from Brady and the Patriots side.
Following the Patriots stunning overtime comeback win, Goodell was forced to confront this reality.
Although he didn’t hand Brady the Lombardi Trophy, as Pats fans had fantasized, or directly address him during the formal trophy presentation, Goodell did sneak up on Brady following the ceremony like a creepy ex in the parking lot of an Olive Garden.
The two engaged in an awkward handshake, with Goodell doing most of the shaking during the exchange. Objectively, Goodell hung on waaaaay to long here, and the part where he pulls Brady toward him as he pulls away is bizarre. At least he didn’t go for the handshake/bro hug combo move. Phew.
If you love uncomfortably awkward moments, this clip is for you. If you’re in New England, it’s probably already your screen saver.
