Another of the faces of the grunge movement has passed away too soon. Soundgarden and Audioslave lead singer Chris Cornell died following a concert in Detroit last night at 52. The Wayne County medical examiner has confirmed that Cornell hung himself but did not release any further details.
For his last song, he sang lyrics from Led Zeppelin’s In My Time of Dying in the middle of an extended version of the Soundgarden classic Slaves and Bulldozers. It appears to have been an eerie farewell slipped in by Cornell.
“In my time of dying, I want nobody to mourn. All I want for you to do is take my body home.”
Cornell joins the list of influential 90’s Seattle rock legends that have overdosed or committed suicide. Many regard Cornell as the best pure vocalist of the recent rock era, with a range and power that distinguished him from other contemporaries.
