When the Bucs moved up in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft to pick kicker Roberto Aguayo, they hoped they had solved their kicking problems for a decade.
But, after struggling through his rookie season, Aguayo was put in the position of having to fight for his job in training camp. After missing a field goal and an extra point in the Bucs preseason opener, he was released.
A scene from last week’s Hard Knocks episode shows his teammates weren’t exactly showering him with words of encouragement before he was let go.
On one practice field goal attempt, defensive lineman Chris Baker stood behind Aguayo and gave him the Danny Noonan taunting treatment and loudly predicted the kick would miss wide left. Aguayo promptly shanked it…. wide left.
Ouch. There’s never any sympathy for the kicker in the NFL.
