Any coach will tell you, sliding head-first into first base isn’t faster than running through the bag, and there’s a greater risk for injury. You just can’t coach the hustle out of some players.
One high school softball player learned her lesson the hard way when she went into a Lenny Dykstra head-first slide to beat a close play at first. It turns out the dirt wasn’t very “slidey” and she ended up painfully folded up like a lawn chair.
