Granny-style free throws have long been taboo in the NBA. Rick Barry became the NBA all-time NBA leader in free throw percentage shooting underhand, but since his departure it’s all but disappeared.
It’s so uncool that players in the modern NBA would rather shoot 50% from the line, than almost certainly improve their percentage shooting underhand.
Apparently, Rockets rookie center Chinanu Onuaku is more concerned with getting buckets than style points. Last night, the rookie out of Louisville threw being cool to the wind when stepped to the line for his first two career NBA free throws and shot both attempts “granny style”.
He nailed them both. Soft touch, friendly roll. What’s not to like?
No matter what you think about underhand free throws, getting buckets is always cool. Do it DeAndre Jordan. Do it.
