The Spurs are down 0-2 after dropping Game 2 of their opening round playoff series to the Warriors. Aside from the obvious problems on the court, the other major drama surrounding the Spurs has been the absence of star forward Kawhi Leonard who has missed all but nine games all year with a quad injury, and has been M.I.A. on the San Antonio bench against the Warriors.
It’s clear the Leonard/Spurs situation is now officially a complete mess, and Popovich’s postgame comments last night will only fan the flames of the controversy further. In his comments, Popovich went out of his way to praise LaMarcus Aldridge – who led the team in scoring with 34 -for not complaining and “playing through everything.” Pop also thanked Aldridge for “being there for his teammates, night after night.”
Given the calculated nature of Popovich, and his previous criticism of Leonard, it’s hard to believe these comments are a coincidence. Either way, the Kawhi/Spurs marriage seems to be toast.
