The Chase Field crowd fell silent during the 7th inning of the Diamondbacks game against the Pirates when Arizona catcher Chris Iannetta took a 93 mile-per-hour fastball straight in the mouth.
Iannetta immediately collapsed after the direct hit, and players from both teams feared the worst. Miraculously, he never lost consciousness and walked off under his own power.
He was left gushing blood from a split mouth, and taken to the hospital for further observation, but he’s apparently okay. Considering the alternative, he’s pretty lucky. He’s also one tough SOB.
