61-year-old Calvin Roberts was drafted in the 4th round by the San Antonio Spurs – back when there was more than 2 rounds in the draft in 1980. He never made the NBA and had a distinguished professional career overseas. Now he wants to fulfill his dream of playing in the NBA, some 40 years later. He actually just wants to make a summer league roster.
This is a cute story, but come on. The guys got a nice YMCA J, and he’s looking for a one game, Tony Romo – run the layup line – contract, and fair enough. But if he’s actually thinking he’s got NBA game, he needs to head to the nearest senior center and get examined for dementia. No way.
It’s not hating on the guy, he’s got elite 61-year old game, but he has no business in the summer league. One time he played against Magic Johnson while playing at Cal State Fullerton, and claims he got the better of Magic on the stat-line, and that’s a great story.
Look, I have 3 kids, I’m 38 years old. I just did a between-legs-dunk at Skyzone yesterday. It doesn’t mean I should play for the Suns in the summer league.
Congratulations on the long international professional career, Mr. Roberts. Hope you make it. Enjoy your 15.
