In the wake of the murder of five police officers in Dallas, three more officers were killed by armed suspects today in Baton Rouge. Three more officers were injured. One of the suspects is also dead. Authorities believe at least one, maybe two, shooters are still at large and could be outfitted in army fatigues and armed with assault rifles.
Baton Rouge is the home of Alton Sterling, who’s viral videotaped killing by Baton Rouge Police officers sparked protests in the city, and across the nation, over police brutality.
According to reports, officers were called to a scene with a report of shots fired. It has not been definitively concluded if the police who arrived at the scene were ambushed, or entered a scene where gunfire was already being exchanged. The detail is crucial in the context of the national powder keg that currently exists regarding police brutality and police safety from attacks.
Louisiana Governor Jon Bel Edwards released a statement regarding the shootings. He will hold a press conference later today.
