A Gorilla was killed by Cincinnati Zoo officials on Saturday, after a 4 year old boy fell into a moat surrounding an exhibit.
Harambe, a 17 year old, 400 lb, western lowland gorilla, resided in the exhibit where the boy fell. The gorilla descended into the moat to retrieve the boy and began to drag him around. The boy wasn’t injured, but Zoo officials deemed the situation to be imminently life threatening. The decision was made to shoot the gorilla in order to save the boy.
The killing of the gorilla has sparked controversy among animal rights activists, who blame the mother of the boy for failing to supervise her child.
Cell phone video of the incident taken by a bystander documented the intense situation.
