Ryan Fitzpatrick is one of the top 6 quarterbacks in the AFC East. Unfortunately, there are only 4 teams in the division. He was shocked when he was benched ahead of the Jets Week 7 home game against the Ravens in favor of Geno Smith after a dreadful 1-5 start to the year.
When Smith left yesterday’s game against Baltimore with an injury, Fitzpatrick came in and led the Jets to the home win. He’s clearly still the best quarterback in the NFL with a lumberjack beard. After the game, he decided to call out the entire organization for having the audacity to bench him in the first place.
“The biggest thing in this game, to last, is to have belief in yourself,” said Fitzpatrick. “Because when the owner stops believing in you and the GM stops believing in you and the coaches stop believing in you, sometimes all you have is yourself. That’s kind of something I’ve dealt with before and something I’m dealing with now.”
Wow. That happened. If anything, Fitzpatrick doesn’t lack for confidence. It’s well known that he’s a Harvard grad, but now he’s going after the organization like Will in the Harvard bar in Good Will Hunting.
Fitzpatrick’s comments about needing self confidence to play QB in the NFL are not off base, but a little self awareness never hurt either.
