UCLA Basketball is way too full of itself
UCLA may have the richest tradition of any college basketball program. Pauley Pavilion is filled with so many national championship banners from the John Wooden era, they had to stuff some into the janitor’s closet. Fans of the program still think the Bruins are among the nation’s top programs, but Colin thinks they’re delusional.
It’s not that they’re bad, it’s just that they are nowhere near the level of consistency other powerhouses like Carolina and Duke, and they think they are. UCLA doesn’t even separate itself in the L.A. sports market. Even though they may make a run this year, they haven’t show the commitment or willingness from a financial standpoint to do what’s necessary to compete year after year.
“You’re not Duke, you’re not Kentucky, and you’re not Kansas.”
Indiana on Line 2, Mr. Alford
Tom Crean is out at Indiana and former Hoosier great, and current UCLA head coach Steve Alford is already being discussed as the most logical replacement. Alford tacitly denied any interest in the job, but Colin still thinks there’s a good chance he ends up taking the job.
Colin still thinks Indiana is a Top 5 college basketball job, and although UCLA is a historically prestigious job, it currently lacks national television visibility, competes in a crowded local sports market, and doesn’t have a track record of paying coaches top dollar. Don’t be surprised if Alford jumps ship.
“I think phone calls have been made.”
