Last night’s Rose bowl classic between Penn State and USC proved that both teams can play with anybody. This morning, people are lamenting the fact that Penn State and USC were excluded by the College Football Playoff committee. Colin sees this as a predictable knee jerk reaction to a great game, but it doesn’t change his opinion that conference champions shouldn’t automatically get in the playoff, and bad losses, like USC and Penn State both have, shouldn’t be ignored by the selection committee.
“That was one of the best college football games I’ve seen in my life. It’s in my Top 5.”
The other story coming out of the Rose Bowl is that USC quarterback Sam Darnold looks like a future NFL franchise quarterback. With Darnold, Colin sees intangibles that jump off the charts. Last night, Darnold put on one of the all-time great performances by a college football quarterback in a big game. Darnold looks like he has the potential to be the best Trojan signal caller in the history of the program, by a lot.
“I think he’s the best quarterback I’ve ever seen at USC.”
Nick Saban took an unprecedented step of relieving Lane Kiffin from his duties as offensive coordinator before the national championship game against Clemson. Colin says this move was not a knee jerk reaction by Saban, because he doesn’t do knee jerk.
Saban clearly had an axe to grind with Kiffin, whom he berated on the sidelines during blowout wins, and disrespected at press conferences throughout the year. Only Saban knows the actual reason, but this was calculated to make Kiffin look bad. There’s no question about it.
“I think it was Saban’s way to punish Lane Kiffin, for whatever reason it is.”
