LeBron’s comments dismissing the regular season are a huge problem for the NBA
The NBA is promoting the Cavs/Celtics game tonight as a battle for the top playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. LeBron James doesn’t think it’s an especially big deal.
After last night’s game, when James was asked about playing the Celtics, he downplayed its importance, and said he doesn’t really care about regular season games.
There is no bigger fan of LeBron than Colin, but today he explained why James’ comments, and the lack of a compelling regular season are huge problems for the NBA.
He pointed out that NBA ratings are down because of a regular season devoid of compelling story lines, and a lack of parity. James comments only feed into the stereotype of NBA players as aloof, and unconcerned with the regular season product.
“This is not a blip. It is a massive problem.”
Point guard rebounding stats are irrelevant
Everyone in the NBA media is buzzing as Russell Westbrook closes in on averaging a triple double for the year. Colin has said he’s not a fan of chasing the statistical accomplishment, and has pointed to evidence that his Thunder teammates are letting Westbrook grab boards to pad his stats.
Today, Colin said, aside from not understanding the triple-double craze, he doesn’t understand why any importance is placed point guard rebounding stats. Point guards aren’t supposed to rebound, their value is in scoring and assisting. Having a point guard who grabs rebounds is like valuing a pitcher because he can hit. It’s a nice trick, but it doesn’t contribute to winning games.
