Being the #1 overall pick as a quarterback is almost always an NFL death sentence
Being the #1 overall pick is every college quarterback’s dream. Colin says be careful what you wish for. Even though the #1 pick gets a fat initial contract, it usually means they’re headed to a dysfunctional environment, often with a coach on the hot seat.
Colin pointed out that the examples of quarterbacks succeeding after failing with their first team is a short one. In the NFL, if you fall on your face the first time, it’s nearly impossible to recover. Being drafted into a bad situation almost always guarantees a bad outcome. The list of recent #1 overall picks is filled with largely forgettable names like Tim Couch and David Carr.
Even though the money isn’t as good at first, going to a well run organization for a player that needs time to grow and learn the NFL game gives them a better chance for success in the long term.
“If the first go around doesn’t work, and the world’s watching, people give up on you.”
Mitchell Trubisky has two traits that could lead to NFL success
Colin has said that he thinks Deshaun Watson is the best quarterback in this year’s NFL Draft. He isn’t sold on Mitchell Trubisky because he only started 13 games in college, and lost 5 games in last year. On yesterday’s show, Greg Cosell said he wasn’t convinced Trubisky could make the NFL throws and had concerns with his mechanics.
Even though Colin thinks Trubisky is the second best quarterback in the draft, he sees two qualities that could potentially lead to NFL success. Trubisky may lack the starts Colin likes to see in a quarterback coming out, but he did have a completion percentage in the high 60’s. Quarterbacks with low completion percentages in college rarely become accurate in the pros – see Jake Locker.
He also has a body type that looks like it can withstand the beating NFL QB’s take on a weekly basis. He can count on taking one, especially if he goes home to Cleveland.
Even though Colin doesn’t love Trubisky, what he sees isn’t all bad.
