Notre Dame guard Matt Farrell finished with 13 points last night, as the Fighting Irish beat Colgate to improve to 10-2 on the year. In 30 years, he will remember none of these things from the game.
After the final whistle, Farrell’s attention was directed to the jumbotron. His brother Bo, who is stationed in Afghanistan with the Army, appeared on the screen. He told his little brother how proud he was of his accomplishments, and that he looked forward to returning home to see him in person. Farrell reacted emotionally to the video, but there was more.
As Farrell watched his brother on the screen, Bo, who was hiding at the Joyce Center, emerged from the team tunnel and surprised him in person. He had apparently arranged his secret homecoming through his grandparents, so even his parents were unaware of his top secret mission.
If the sight of the brothers embracing doesn’t get the waterfalls flowing, you should get your tear ducts checked out.
Servicemen and women surprising their loved ones is a story that never gets old. Happy Holidays to the Farrell family.
