Manute Bol was the tallest player in NBA history, and it turns out that he might have been the oldest to ever play in the league, too.
Bol passed away in a car accident at the age of 47, according to official records, but Pacer scout Kevin Mackey, who discovered Manute, and brought him from the Sudan to Cleveland in 1985, says Bol was actually much, much older.
In an interview with Zagsblog, Mackey dropped the incredible bombshell that Bol may have been as old as 50 while playing in the NBA. Mackey admits he made up a fake birth date in 1962, so potential teams wouldn’t be turned off by his age. In reality, Bol was probably in his 40’s when his career began and played into his 50’s:
“I gave him his birthday because they didn’t know how old he was. It was in October, I wanted to make it after Sept. 1. I wanted to make sure he was young enough because he didn’t have an age. I think he was [in his 40S], I really do. But there’s no way of ever really knowing.”
“Every athletic door is open at 19, every athletic door is closed when you’re 35. He was probably 40, 50 years old when he was playing in the NBA.”
It turns out Manute Bol was actually an old man. This feels like the end of The Usual Suspects.
