We’ve all been there. You miss a huge penalty kick in the final of a major soccer championship to lose the title for your country, retire from international soccer, and the next week you get sentenced to prison for tax evasion.
That’s exactly what just happened to world football superhero Lionel Messi, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison and assessed a €2 million fine by a Spanish court for tax evasion, following his hugely disappointing Copa America choke job.
Messi, who was accused of stashing money in “Panama Files” hideouts in Uruguay and Belize, can appeal the conviction. Most think it’s unlikely that Messi will seve any actual jail time, but it remains to be seen.
Regardless of the outcome, it’s been a rough month for La Pulga.
