Following his electrifying second round knockout of Eddie Alvarez at Madison Square Garden at UFC 205, Conor McGregor is the undisputed king of the UFC, and an ascending global superstar in the world’s fastest growing sport. Floyd Mayweather is the emperor of the dying sport of boxing and is largely an afterthought in terms of relevancy compared to McGregor.
Rumors of a potential interdisciplinary fight between McGregor and Mayweather have been swirling for months, including reports that the two were close to agreeing to a Vegas mega fight earlier this year.
With McGregor’s star soaring in the aftermath of UFC 205, Mayweather is finding it difficult to avoid being asked about McGregor, and the inevitable comparison between the two fighters at the top of their respective sports.
When Mayweather was recently approached by TMZ and asked about the comparison to McGregor, he was clearly annoyed and expressed his displeasure.
“I didn’t know Conor McGregor was undefeated,” said Mayweather. “I didn’t know that he reigned in MMA for 20 years and was undefeated. And was world champion in 5 different weight classes. That’s something I didn’t know, so I guess you guys telling me something new, if you say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA. Have he ever made $300 million in one night? Have he ever made $100 million in one night? Have he ever made $70 million in one night?”
He continued, “I think it’s time for Conor McGregor to go out there and do what he do. But never compare Conor McGregor to me. It’s a total disrespect. I’m an elephant. Elephants don’t beef with ants. An elephant is so large he don’t even see ants.”
Elephants may not beef with ants, but the “ant” is unquestionably the bigger global star right now, and it clearly bothers the “elephant.”
