Iceland is best known for ice, and Bjork. She’ll have to step aside, for now. The Iceland men’s national team shocked the football world, when it tied powerhouse Portugal 1 -1 today in Euro 2016. It was Iceland’s first match in it’s first appearance in a major international soccer tournament appearance in the nation’s history.
Portugal, led by the superstar cover boy Cristiano Ronaldo, were massive favorites headed into the match. They’ve made it to the quarterfinals or better of the last 5 European Championships.
Nani put Portugal on the board first when he redirected a low cross past the Icelandic keeper in the 31st minute of the first half. It looked like an onslaught was likely to come.
Iceland, however, refused to succumb to a Portuguese avalanche. Central midfielder, and new national hero, Birkir Bjarnason, netted the improbable equalizer for the Icelanders in the 50th minute, when he ripped a volley past the Portuguese keeper to tie the match at 1 apiece.
Iceland was able to hold on for dear life at the end and eek out the 1 -1 draw. It will go down as one of the greatest upsets in the history of the European Championship, and the European football.
There’s a party in the streets of Reykjavik tonight. Turn up the Bjork. Famous Icelander, “The Mountain”, from Game of Thrones celebrated his country’s victory in its trial by combat.
