Bill Belichick spoke at Eric Mangini’s wedding. Mangini’s son’s middle name is William, after Belichick. A once close professional and personal relationship has been rendered non-existent from the hard feelings resulting from the Spygate scandal from his time as head coach of the Jets.
Mangini was in-studio in The Herd today, and opened up about the fallout from Spygate and how it affected his relationship with Belichick.
He told Colin that his intentions for reporting the Patriots wasn’t to bury Belichick and the organization, but to protect his team from being at a competitive disadvantage.
“The practice itself i didn’t think had very much value. But as the head coach of the New York Jets, my responsibility was to, whatever competitive advantage, no matter how small, my job was to make sure that my team had that. And that my team was protected. So I wanted to shut it down if it came to our stadium.”
Mangini confessed that he regrets that his disclosure snowballed into the national Spygate scandal and soured relationships that he valued.
“The thing with Bill is, I owe him a lot. He taught me football. He read at my wedding. Luke, my middle son, has William as his middle name. We were close. So to have something like this, which wasn’t what it was supposed to be affect the relationship. It’s disappointing, and it is a regret that I have.”
Apparently, forgiving and forgetting isn’t “The Patriot Way.”
