DeMarcus Cousins basketball talent is unquestioned. He’s regarded by most as the most talented center in the NBA. He’s also a toxic asset that most teams won’t consider trading for because he’s been branded as a malcontent in league circles. His recent viral run-in with a Sacramento Bee reporter in a postgame interview has done little to change that perception.
Last night’s game against the Blazers crossed the entire spectrum of the best and the worst of Boogie.
On the court, Cousins was unstoppable on the night. The unenviable task of guarding him fell on one of the 16 Plumlee brothers playing in the NBA, who had no answers. Cousins led the Kings with a remarkable 55 points, but with the game tied at 119 with under a minute to go in the fourth quarter, things got weird.
Cousins scored on a spin move to the hole to give the Kings a 2-point lead. Boogie then walked over to the Portland bench to talk some trash, and spit out his mouthpiece at the bench.
In a strange series of events, Cousins was ejected for spitting out the mouthpiece and ran off the court in protest. The ejection was then bizarrely overturned by the officials, who allowed Cousins to return to the game. The video clearly shows Cousins intentionally spit out the mouthpiece. It’s unclear what caused the refs’ change of heart.
In the on-court postgame interview, Cousins was lit. He went off on the officials for the ejection, and maintained that the mouthpiece fell out of his mouth accidentally. He also managed to insult Mason Plumlee and the rest of the Blazers frontcourt.
It’s hard to make yourself look bad after dropping 55, but Cousins somehow managed to pull it off.

Cousins obviously wants out of Sacramento, but any team that trades for him will get the good, the bad and the ugly. It was all on display last night.
