People cope with loss in different ways. Last night, Marlins Second Baseman Dee Gordon wore the jersey and batting helmet of his late friend and teammate, Jose Fernandez, when he stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the first inning in last night’s game against the Mets.
Gordon entered the game with only 8 career home runs, but other forces greater than himself were at work. He took the 2 – 0 pitch and yanked a home run down the right field line. As he rounded the bases, both teams were overcome by the emotion of the moment.
Sports are best when they’re about more than the final score. Last night was the best of sports.
