Kentucky’s De’Aaron Fox is vying to be one of the first draft picks taken off the board in Thursday’s Draft. The Lakers select second, and all indications are they will select UCLA’s Lonzo Ball, but Fox may be the draft’s most undervalued prospect.
One vocal critic of Fox throughout the season was basketball stage dad and fledgling sneaker impresario LaVar Ball, who wasn’t impressed with Fox’s 39 point performance in Kentucky’s Sweet 16 win over UCLA:
They came up short, but one game doesn’t define his season. No one is going to take De’Aaron Fox over him because of one game.
It’s about your body of work, and people know what he can do.”
Ball also fired a separate shot at Fox, saying Lonzo was the better NBA prospect of the two:
He can’t mess with ‘Zo. You can have 40 points and Lonzo can have two points and make the game-winner, and I’m going with him.
You had more points, but look at who won the game.”
In one section of a Bleacher Report profile of Fox by Jonathan Abrahams today, De’Aaron’s father, Aaron, responded to LaVar’s criticism of his son with a body slam quote:
My son already ate his ass up twice. [LaVar] can say what he wants to say. I just tell him to go back and watch the film. That’s it. All that yap, yap, yapping, I don’t even got to respond to that.
We played them twice. Twice his son got outplayed. I always tell [De’Aaron], let your game speak for it. You ain’t got to talk. You ain’t got to fuss.”
Big Baller what.
In case LaVar is inclined to ‘watch the film,’ here’s De’Aaron torching Lonzo and the Bruins for 39 in the tournament:
During their regular season matchup, Fox finished with 20 points, 9 assists. Ball had 14 points, 7 assists:
