Today, Colin said sources he trusts close to the potential Conor McGregor/Floyd Mayweather mega-fight say the fight will happen after all. Colin is so sure, he booked rooms in Vegas in late September for the fight.
He previously said the fight was unlikely to happen because it would be too difficult for the fighters to agree on a common set of fight rules, and other specific logistical details. A similar type of fight was held in 1976, when Muhammad Ali fought wrestler Anotnio Inoki. The fight was an unwatchable disaster.
Mayweather/McGregor will probably be awful too. In the end, the payday could be too big for the fighters to walk away.
“This is going to be commerce. That’s what it’s going to be. Does it have a little Bernie Madoff feel to it? Does it have a little Ponzi scheme. Does it have a little ‘This is going to be awful and we’re all going to pay $100?’ I guess.
But I’ve grown up with Nik Wallenda. I’ve grown up with Evel Knievel. I lived in Vegas for seven years. I grew up with daredevils. I watched Evel Knievel, for the record, try to fly a rocket ship over the Grand Canyon. it was pathetic. It lasted like 9 seconds.”
Even if the fight is awful, people love huge events more than they care about the quality of the actual fight. One thing is certain. If it happens, this will be a huge event.
