According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are prepared to release Tony Romo within the next several weeks. When Romo hits the market, he’ll be the hottest free agent quarterback since Peyton Manning was released by the Colts in 2012.
He has reportedly narrowed his list to a handful of teams, including the Denver Broncos.
Signing with the Broncos sounds like a good move on the surface. They have an elite defense, a solid front office led by John Elway, and just won a Super Bowl after signing Peyton Manning in a similar situation. Sounds perfect, right? Colin doesn’t think so.
Today in The Herd, he said that Romo signing with the Broncos would be a big mistake, and cited 4 reasons why:
- Denver has a defensive minded rookie head coach – Offensive minded Gary Kubiak is gone. In steps rookie head coach Vance Joseph. Joseph was the defensive coordinator in Miami before taking the Denver job. It doesn’t make any sense for Romo to walk into a situation with a rookie head coach with a defensive background. Not ideal.
2. Denver has a bad offensive line- Denver’s o-line struggled all last year, and is still a work in progress. If Romo couldn’t stay upright behind a historically good Cowboys line, there’s no reason to think he can do so in Denver. Plus, the AFC West has elite pass rushers like Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. If Romo signs with Denver, he can plan on taking some hits.
3. The AFC West is loaded– If Romo goes to Denver, it doesn’t make them the prohibitive favorite to win the division. Denver would likely still be picked to finish 3rd behind the Derek Carr-led Raiders, and the incredibly solid Chiefs. If Romo signed with the Texans, his path back to the playoffs is considerably easier.
4. The Weather – Peyton Manning’s numbers during his Denver tenure were always better early in the year than late. Why? Weather. The Denver winter cold would be brutal for Romo and his bad back. A tough hit in sub-zero temperatures could shatter him like broken glass. Denver during November and December ain’t Jerry’s World.
Picture Romo taking this hit at Mile High in a December night game. Not good:
