Ohio State begins their season tonight by traveling to Bloomington to face Indiana. The last time we saw the Buckeyes, they were getting trounced by Deshaun Watson and eventual national champion Clemson, but Colin has picked Ohio State to bounce back this year and win the national championship.
Why is Colin so high on the Buckeyes? Today, in The Herd, he explained why he likes Urban Meyer’s squad to lift the trophy at the end of the year.
Here are the top 4 reasons why:
- Urban Meyer – Coming off a bowl loss, Meyer is dangerous. The last two times he lost in a bowl, he followed up by winning a title (2007, 2014). Last year’s 31-0 drubbing at the hands of Clemson was the worst of his career. Meyer is as angry and motivated as any season in his career. This should scare people.
2. J.T. Barrett – He’s not an elite pro prospect and struggled at times last year, but he’s a fifth year senior and has 26-4 record in his career. He also returns 4 of his 5 offensive lineman from last year, and should thrive under new offensive coordinator – former Indiana HC – Kevin Wilson.
3. Returning defensive players – The Buckeyes return 6 of their 7 top defensive players, including all of their top defensive lineman, and all but one of their linebackers from a team that scored 7 defensive TD’s last season. OSU oordinator Greg Schiano has said this d-line is better than 2 he had in the NFL. Colin thinks it will be the best line college football has seen in years.
4. Schedule – The Buckeyes have a tough early season matchup against Oklahoma, but get nine days to prepare, and the Sooners are coming to Columbus. They also get Penn State at home, and face a Michigan squad that should be worse than the team they beat last year. The Wolverines face extremely physical Wisconsin the week before “The Game.” It’s the perfect scheduling storm.
