Otto Porter Jr., of all people, is in the middle of a free agent bidding war between the Wizards and the Nets. He’s agreed to a four-year $106 million max offer sheet with the Nets, but the Wizards have the opportunity to match. Multiple reports say they will. Either way, Porter is going to get paid.
Today in The Herd, Colin said Porter should thank Steph Curry for his imminent payday. Curry has so drastically transformed the NBA into a three-ball league in the last several years, that a previously marginal player like Porter is now too valuable for teams to pass up.
It’s the same Otto Porter who has averaged about 9 points a game in his career, and was considered a borderline bust out of Georgetown until this year. So how is Porter swinging the leverage hammer in these negotiations? He started hitting the three.
Last year, Porter was 4th in the league in 3-point percentage, and in today’s 3-point heavy NBA he’s now a hot commodity.
Timing is everything, and Porter’s timing is impeccable. Mostly because he is playing in the era of Steph Curry.
“Send a Christmas card to Steph Curry.”
