Rick Pitino was ‘effectively fired’ as head coach of the Louisville basketball program, today, after becoming entangled in the FBI probe involving the funneling of top recruits to basketball programs in exchange for cash.
Pitino claimed to have no knowledge of wrongdoing in the recruitment of 5-star recruit Josh Bowen in exchange for a reported $100,000, but was relieved of his duties, along with athletic director Tom Jurich.
Today in The Herd, Colin pointed out that Pitino’s downfall is a result of him being more concerned about himself than his players, and a desire to stay on top of his profession at any cost by capitalizing on the rampant corruption in recruiting.
Surely, he’s not the only coach that has broken rules – as this massive scandal continues to unravel, more names will come to light – but not every coach is dirty. Pitino is, and has been for a long time.
In the end, this mess was to big to explain away, and the depiction of him as a dirty coach will outlive any of his on-court achievements.
