San Francisco’s hiring of John Lynch as their GM shocked just about everyone, including Colin. He knows Lynch from his time at Fox Sports, and personally likes him, but he thought hiring a GM with zero GM experience to a 6-year deal was a bizarre move by a losing organization.
Colin had a chance to sit down with Lynch last night in Houston for a couple of cervezas and came away impressed with Lynch’s self-awareness about his inexperience, and thinks his move to hire Adam Peters, who has extensive scouting and talent evaluating experience from 8 years in Denver, is an extremely positive sign.
Today in The Herd, Colin says that his biggest concern for Lynch in San Francisco has nothing to do with his lack of experience or ability to do the job, it’s owner Jed York, and his recent history of sabotaging his coaches and GM’s by leaking information to media.
“One of the things that worries me about the 49’ers is people constantly show you who they are, so believe them.”
He continued, “Jed York has shown you, time and time again that he will leak stuff, so believe him.
When Harbaugh was about to get fired, there were all sorts of stories leaked in the press. Where did they come from? Jed York. When Chip Kelly got canned, where did they come from? Where were the leaks? Jed York.
How do I know that? Because the one guy he hand picked, Jim Tomsula, when he got canned, there were no leaks.”
Colin knows that Lynch told Fox NFL Insider Jay Glazer the news of his hiring first, because of their relationship working at Fox. Almost immediately after ESPN’s Adam Schefter had the story. He’s almost certain Schefter’s source was York.
To succeed in San Francisco, John Lynch better have a good eye for talent, and eyes in the back of his head.
“It worries me with the 49’ers that people show you who they are, and whenever I see 49’ers stories, some were leaked to my former employer, some were leaked to us. I just feel that I can’t trust the guy running that football team.
He keeps showing me time and time again.”
