The Mexican national team might want to wait a couple of days, or years, to return home after getting their teeth kicked in 7-0 by Chile last night.
It was Mexico’s worst competitive international loss in the country’s soccer history, and it happened in front of a overwhelmingly Mexican crowd at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. The historic defeat was made even more surprising because Mexico entered the contest on a 22 match winning streak.
Chile held a commanding, but not insurmountable 2 – 0 halftime lead, but in the second half they extended the lead from convincing to historically embarrassing. The Chileans netted five second half scores and sent the devastated Mexican crowd headed for the exits well ahead of the final whistle.
Eduardo Vargas led the record Chilean onslaught with a career high 4 goals. Edson Punch added two scores.
Chile will face Colombia in Chicago on Wednesday in the Copa America Semifinals.
