Grumpy baseball purists are reaching for their blood pressure medication this morning, after Asdrubal Cabrera displayed genuine emotion when his 11th inning, 3-run walk off home run gave the Mets a thrilling 9 – 8 extra inning win, and a 1-game lead in the NL Wild Card Race.
Cabrera knew it was gone from the moment he turned on the hanging breaking ball. In his excitement, he unleashed a two-handed bat flip worthy of the silver medal in the Olympic hammer toss. Baseball traditionalists had to cover their eyes and look away from the horrific scene. Oh, the horror. They aren’t happy unless the game’s fun-level resembles George Orwell’s 1984.
Forget them Asdrubal. Don’t let the cranks bat-flip shame you. It’s 2016. Everyone else is reaching for the replay button.
