Brock Osweiler is the NFL quarterback equivalent of buying a mansion directly off the Zillow listing without a without a walk through or inspection. The Texans paid him $72 million without even meeting with him in person.
He parlayed an unspectacular 8 game stretch in relief of Peyton Manning (10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions) into a massive free agent deal as the Texans’ new franchise quarterback.
Colin isn’t buying it. He thinks the Osweiler is all projection and no production. And what he has seen, he isn’t crazy about. Today in The Herd, he gave 4 reasons why Brock Osweiler will be a bust with Houston.
1. He’s not a dynamic athlete – He’s not great at any one thing. He’s athletically limited. No mobility. Even though he’s 6’7″, he has an average arm. Tall, immobile guy that can’t sling it? Where do we send the $72 million contract?!
2. Limited Starting Experience – He only started one year in college, and 8 games in the pros. He doesn’t have a body of work. It’s all speculation that isn’t backed up by results. He was 5 – 2 with the Broncos last year, but only threw 10 touchdown passes while also enjoying the benefit of the historic Broncos D. Matt Cassel had a better season with the Patriots. How’s he doing?
3. John Elway wasn’t interested – He had Osweiler for four years and passed on him. No one saw more Brock Osweiler and he said “I’m good”. Would arguably the smartest GM of the Super Bowl champ have let him walk if he was convinced he was the heir apparent to Peyton Manning?
4. Questionable decision making – Osweiler abandoned a Super Bowl champ in Denver to chase the money in Houston. He was disgruntled and pouted when he was demoted back to the bench when Manning from injury. He recently made comments throwing Houston coaches under the bus for trying to make him too much like Tom Brady (Explain why that’s a bad thing?). Oh yeah, he also has a misspelled tattoo – “Live Life To It’s Fullest”.
The NFL track record for tall, immobile quarterbacks who ink massive free agent deals after one season isn’t a collection of Hall of Famers. It’s Scott Mitchell and Elvis Grbac. Buyer beware.
