Previously unthinkable events continue to become the new reality. A Black Lives Matter protest in downtown Dallas devolved into a terrifying scene of gunfire and chaos last night when a gunman, or gunmen, ambushed and killed 5 Dallas police officers during the rally.

The protest was held in response to the controversial police shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, which were captured on video and instantly went viral on social media this week.
According to reports, one or more armed gunmen opened fire on police officers at around 9 pm while the protesters were still gathered. In the chaos,12 officers were shot, 5 have died from their injuries.

Three suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting. A fourth suspect exchanged gunfire with the police, and was later killed during the standoff. The deceased gunman has been identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, a resident of Dallas. Further details regarding his background are emerging. Specific details regarding the connection between those arrested and Johnson are not publicly known at this time.

The Dallas Police Chief David Brown addressed the media regarding the status of the investigation. He divulged that, during the stand off, Johnson stated that he was acting alone, he was upset about the recent police shootings, and wanted to kill white police officers.
